Fully consented and ready to build renewable energy project will generate enough electricity to power circa. 14,000 homes

UK-based renewable energy company, Climate ER secured full planning permission in 2023 to build a 49.9MW solar farm near Marsh Hill, Micklebring.  The project, known as the Mere Flats Solar Farm, will generate enough electricity to power 14,000 average UK homes.

Climate ER have now secured full planning permission (ref: 22/01978/FULM) to build a solar farm and electricity storage, which will also be used to provide green electricity not only to the local distribution network but also to generate green hydrogen for haulage transport in South Yorkshire as well as electric vehicle charging all “on site” and within the Doncaster area.

The project will boost energy security for Britain, reducing the UK’s reliance on fossil fuel generation and imported sources of energy. This solar farm would therefore deliver UK and regional energy security, UK Net Zero goals and could help develop a regional hydrogen economy in South Yorkshire.

Due to significant advances in technology over recent years, it will be built and operated without any form of Government subsidy and will deliver predictable and stable clean green electricity onto the UK power grid for up to 40 years.  A temporary planning permission means that the site will retain its status as Green Belt even in 40 years’ time after the solar farm is decommissioned and completely removed.

Proposal

The 49.9MW solar farm will:

  • Generate enough electricity to power around 14,000 average UK homes

  • Provide electricity storage to help the National Grid balance supply and demand of electricity locally and Nationally

Benefits

  • Boost national energy security for Britain, reducing our nation’s reliance on imported gas, oil, and electricity

  • Contribute towards a net-zero UK economy and tackle climate change

  • Protect the Green Belt from permanent development, as this solar farm is a temporary project

  • Enhance biodiversity across the site and the local area

  • Potential to deliver electric vehicle charging Potential to generate clean hydrogen for haulage transport in South Yorkshire

  • Deliver a Community Benefit Fund of £250,000 over 40 years, index linked
